Angélique Kidjo has made a name for herself that reaches far past the borders of her west-African home country of Benin. This multilingual musician, named “Africa’s premier diva” by Time Magazine, has received a plethora of awards, from an Afropop Hall of Fame induction to a Grammy for her 2007 Djin Djin album. In 2010 Forbes ranked Kidjo fourth on their list of the Top 40 Most Powerful Celebrities in Africa, but not just for her musical talent. Since becoming a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2002, Kidjo has traveled throughout many African countries to draw attention to significant issues. In addition to her benefit concerts and rights campaigns, Kidjo has been working since 2006 via her Batonga Foundation to improve the education of girls in impoverished Africa. Earlier this year, Kidjo released her live concert special Spirit Rising. Most recently, Kidjo performed for the international business and political leaders at the New York Forum on Africa in Libreville, Gabon.
